But here's the thing, we need to have a serious talk about consent in the cosplay world. It's so important to respect each other's personal boundaries. Where did "Cosplay is Not Consent" originate from?
In the past decade, there's been this phrase going around in the cosplay community: "cosplay is not consent." It's like a friendly reminder that just because someone's wearing a revealing or sexy costume, it doesn't mean they're inviting others to touch them without permission.
According to Wikipedia, this whole thing started back in 2013 when Rochelle Keyhan, Erin Filson, and Anna Kegler decided to tackle the issue of sexual harassment and assault within the cosplay community. They wanted to make it clear that everyone deserves respect, regardless of what they're wearing.
It really caught people's attention when New York Comic Con put up these big signs at the entrance in 2014, saying "Cosplay is Not Consent." They wanted to remind everyone to ask for permission before taking photos and to respect people's right to say NO.
Since then, the movement against sexual harassment of cosplayers has gained a lot of momentum and awareness. Even mainstream news outlets like Mercury News and Los Angeles Times have covered the topic, which helps to spread awareness about sexual harassment beyond just the cosplay community.
Why is Consent Important in Cosplay?
Cosplayers put a lot of time, effort, and money into their costumes to bring their favorite characters to life. They should be able to enjoy the event without fear of harassment or violation. Just because someone is dressed in a revealing costume does NOT mean they are inviting unwanted advances.
Consent is crucial in cosplay because it promotes a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. It allows cosplayers to have control over their own bodies and their boundaries, which should always be respected.
Cosplay events are supposed to be fun and enjoyable for all, but without consent, it can quickly turn into a negative and uncomfortable experience.
How Can We Promote Consent in Cosplay?
1. Education and Awareness
The first step in promoting consent is through education and raising awareness about the issue. This can be done through panels, workshops, and discussions at cosplay events to educate attendees on what consent means and why it's important.

Sexual comments or advances: Being a creep towards cosplayers is not cool at all. It's not just disrespectful, but it's also a clear violation of their consent. So, let's just not do that, okay?
How to Ask for Consent in Cosplay
Asking for consent doesn't have to be awkward or uncomfortable. Here are some tips on how to ask for consent in cosplay:
Ask before taking photos: If you come across a cosplayer with an amazing costume or character, it's always a good idea to ask for their permission before snapping a photo. This way, you show respect for the cosplayer and give them a chance to strike a pose and look their absolute best for the picture.
Ask before touching: If you want to check out someone's costume or props, just make sure to ask for permission first. The same goes for getting a closer look at their cosplay or snapping a picture or the details.
Respect boundaries: If someone declines your request for a photo or any form of interaction, just respect their decision and don't push further. It's important to understand that everyone has the right to decide what they're comfortable with.
Use clear language: For example, you can say "Hey, can I take a photo with you?" or "Is it alright if I touch your props?". This way, there won't be any confusion and the cosplayer will know exactly what they're giving consent to.
Be mindful of body language: Sometimes, even if someone doesn't say "no" outright, their body might show that they're not comfortable. If you notice hesitation or them leaning away, it's a sign to back off and respect their boundaries.
